A. Your installer is correct. Most travertine contains many holes that are filled with a cement filler. The cement filler does not take a shine when polished. There are fillers that can be used that will take a shine, however.

If you are looking for a more consistent shine, your installer or stone restoration contractor will need to remove the cement filler and replace it with one of the other types of fillers. For example, non-sanded epoxy grout can be used. There are other fillers made just for this purpose. This is not a dot a do it yourself project.
